Breast Cancer and the BRCA tests – My Personal Story

My Personal Story

Breast Cancer and the BRCA Tests

I felt compelled to write this newsletter after watching and listening to all the media talk on Angelina Jolie’s choice for a double mastectomy after the results of her BRCA tests.

I’m sure there are many other women (and men) out there in a similar position who have spent a split second wondering if they made the right choice because of a celebrity making hers, or who are now beginning to wonder about their own health in this area after seeing the news.

As this media announcement is personal to my own circumstances, I am sharing my story here for you to expand your awareness and instinct for the journey that you may be on. I share in the hope that it helps others to make their own decisions, regardless of what is popular in the media.

As someone who has a significant family history of breast cancer, a smaller history of ovarian cancer, lost my mother at 54 to non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, and with various other cancers scattered on both sides of my family tree (including my nephew who had leukaemia at 2 – now 17), just thinking about whether to have the BRCA tests caused me to focus on thoughts of “what if?” in a scary, unknown future.

The fact is, the future is unknown anyway.

Having had several mammograms over the last few years - which I am aware can contribute to the growth of breast cancer cells through radiation exposure and now only being two months shy of 39 - I was already feeling my mind and body responding to negative thoughts about even making the decision.

Just contemplating what the results might mean was impacting my life in a negative way.

I decided that whether I had the tests or not, it would not guarantee any specific future outcome i.e. carrying the gene does not guarantee that I will get breast cancer, alternatively even if I am not carrying the gene, I am not guaranteed that I will NOT get breast cancer – or ovarian cancer.
Either way, even just having to consider the consequences, unanswered questions and fear of the future by debating with myself and loved ones whether to have the test or not, was causing me a degree of mental, emotional and physical stress in every moment of thinking about it.

Knowing the answer would then possibly bring about MORE mental, emotional and physical stress, which ultimately would not serve my overall energy state in remaining positive, strong and determined within my own mind and every cell in my body.

As I have dedicated myself and my life to living the best life possible by teaching, guiding and educating others to do the same for themselves, I made the choice not to have the tests and just get busy living the life I am most happy living - in alignment with my own personal philosophy of balancing my thoughts, emotions, exercise and eating.

This is most definitely a personal choice for every woman (or man) faced with this possibility. I do fear however that the misinformation and over exposure of celebrities choices, may lead others to lose their personal power by allowing the unknown future – whatever it may be – a greater monopoly over the present moment and how one chooses to live for the best future possible, by focusing on living in the best possible way NOW.

I offer this personal information in the hope that you will listen to your own instincts and resolve to make the best possible decisions for YOU, according to the life you are determined to create within yourself.

There is no right or wrong way for such a personal journey, only that you follow your own path in creating it.

Educate yourself and then listen to your inner voice..

With love

Super Food Nutrition

This year I’ve been studying David Wolfe’s Raw Food Nutrition certification to compliment my nutritional knowledge (the rock star of the nutrition world is actually coming to Brisbane in May if you’re interested!). I’ve taken an immense personal interest in REAL and LIVING foods for my own personal health and ongoing journey of mind, body and food healing.

Yesterday I enquired at 3 major organic health food shops in my local area (Toowoomba, QLD) about a couple of very important and highly nutritional super foods, only to discover that NONE of them had any in stock, and only 1 had actually even heard of these super foods before! One shop didn’t even know what I was talking about!

I was totally surprised - how can so-called “Health and Organic” shops not be aware of important super foods in helping to educate their customers in easy ways to enrich their nutritional content and longevity?

This inspired me to inspire YOU with a brand new MindBodyFood TV episode on the subject!

Top 5 Natural Sweeteners I Upcoming Chocolate Workshop in Toowoomba

> 5 Top Natural Sweeteners!
> New Raw Chocolate Workshop!

My Top 5 Natural Sweeteners

We all know that sugar is bad for you and contributes to various health issues. So here are my top 5 natural sweeteners that are full of vitamins, minerals, enzymes and amino acids that will contribute to your nutritional health without compromising on taste. Simply pick one according to your preference!

1. Coconut sugar — As the coconut tree is a palm, this means that coconut sugar is a type of palm sugar. It is made from the sap of cut flower buds off the coconut palm, and is a traditional sweetener that’s been used for thousands of years in the South and South-East Asia. Due to its extraction process it has a very high heat resistance and won’t melt easily over the stove. Thankfully, it can come in granular form (has a hint of caramel) or liquid (syrup nectar, which has more of a fruity flavour). The granules are delicious sprinkled over hot chia pudding or quinoa porridge.

2. Rapadura sugar — Also known as panela and jaggery, this sugar is a traditional uncentrifuged juice pressed from whole cane sugar, which is then evaporated without separating the molasses. This way the minerals stay intact. Like coconut sugar, it also comes in a granular or liquid form. After you’ve smelt and tasted coconut sugar, you may take an instant dislike to rapadura in comparison. It really comes down to individual preference as they both act very similarly. You can use coconut and rapadura sugar interchangeably. Coconut sugar is less sweet of the two.

3. Raw honey — Raw in this instance means that the honey hasn’t been exposed to high temperatures (over 45 degrees), leaving the healthy enzymes intact. Many cultures believe raw honey to hold medicinal qualities. Honey is excellent mixed with nut butter (raw fudge), cacao (healthy icing) or smoothies and desserts.

4. Maple syrup — MS is made from the sap of tapped maple trees, which is also then evaporated to make a concentrated syrup or a granulated sugar. Maple syrup is fantastic to use in cheesecakes and slice bases, and even in raw chocolate (although I don’t tend to use it in chocolate as my first preference).

5. Fruit — Unprocessed, natural and full of fibre. Hands down beats any juice unless is straight from the blender, which includes the fibre. Bananas, apples, blueberries and pears are regulars for me. I like to use mashed banana in my chia puddings, and freeze it for smoothies and “ice-creams”. Both banana and apple puree can be used as an egg substitute in vegan baking (as can Chia seeds). Dried paw-paw and pineapple are the only two fruits I include into homemade muesli with nuts and seeds. Occasionally I use madjool dates in raw protein balls, brownies, or cheesecake bases but otherwise don’t tend to use dried fruits much at all, except for Goji berries. Real, live and fresh fruits (and vegetables) are best – especially straight off the tree!

So there you have it! 5 healthy, delicious and more nutritious forms of natural sugar that are perfect replacements to refined, processed and “poisonous” sugars. Coconut sugar and rapadura can both be found at your local health food shops or organic fruit and veg store.

(Qld Discount Vitamins in Toowoomba Plaza at Kearney Springs near Kmart sells them at a good price!)

“Over the six week course I learnt so much about myself. It’s been a very long time since I have concentrated on ME…..I always felt guilty before. I know I have a lot of work to do but I am excited about my future for the first time in ages. Viki I thank you so much for helping me to love myself again.” – Paula

Recipe:
Orange Almond Flourless Cake!

I came up with this very simple, easy and delicious one-bowl cake a few weeks ago and have since created variations of “Orange Chocolate Cake” and “Carrot Cake with Nuts and Seeds”. It’s a winner!

Ingredients:
2 cups of Almond Meal
1 tblsp ground Linseed OR LSA (linseed, sunflower and almond ground)
1/2 cup Coconut Sugar
1 tsp mixed spices
1 tsp cinnamon
1/2 cup fresh squeezed orange juice
3 eggs

Optional:
1 tsp ground ginger
1 cup chopped walnuts

What to do:
Preheat oven to 170 degrees (fan-forced).
Add the almond meal, linseed/LSA, coconut sugar and spices into a bowl and stir through to eliminate any lumps.
Pour the fresh orange juice into the centre and mix through until all dry ingredients are sticky with the juice.
Add eggs ONE at a time, mixing each one through thoroughly as the mixture becomes softer.
Pour into a lightly greased loaf tin (or round) and bake for 25-30mins or until a skewer pierces clean in the centre.

Serve with chopped pistachios, cream or ice-cream and ENJOY!

Ho’oponopono Meditation: A Way to Healing and Forgiveness

close up prayer 242x300 Hooponopono for Forgiveness

Ho’oponopono..

Pronounced “hoh OH pohno pohno,” it is the ancient Hawaiian system of healing, problem solving and transformation.

If you’ve been carrying around guilt, blame, regret, anger or shame… perhaps practising Ho’oponopono for forgiveness, is just what your mind, body and spirit need.

In Hawaiian the word means “to make right or to rectify an error.” This may not necessarily be something literal that you have done. An “error” can also be a memory (or memories) of emotions, words, situations and behaviours that replay in your subconscious mind and feed your limiting beliefs.

By practising Ho’oponopono, we are able to open our subconscious minds to cleanse, release and heal the painful memories. In many cases, to also forgive ourselves and others.

By using four distinct, direct and cleansing phrases you can release pain and suffering, heal past hurts and clear erroneous subconscious beliefs holding you back from true happiness.

To Practice:

Sit or lay down comfortably, ensuring your spine is straight to protect your nervous system and open your airways.

Begin to focus on your breathing, simply observing the breath moving in and out of your body. Focus on breathing deep into your belly to increase oxygen intake, nourish your cells and organs with vital nutrients, pump lymph flow, and feed your brain. Try to exhale for the same count as you inhale.

After a few minutes of regulating your breath and quietening your mind, bring to consciousness a person, a belief, a memory, a hurt that continues to stay with you and prevent your personal growth, and consider this for a few moments.

If emotions threaten to erupt, allow them to – release the negative feelings and pain – and continue to breathe deeply and evenly for the same count in and out.

Begin to say the four phrases below in order. You may say them aloud or mentally:

I am sorry.

Please forgive me.

Thank you.

I love you.

Continue to slowly and purposefully repeat these phrases aloud or in your mind, breathing deeply into your stomach and exhaling for the same count as you inhale.

Allow any emotions or physical sensations to be experienced. When you allow yourself to go with the flow, your emotions and sensations will feel acknowledged and heard, and no longer have any power or fear over you.

Breathe deeply. Repeat your Ho’Oponopono forgiveness phrases.

Heal, release and transform your subconscious mind to be open, positive and free.

Heal your heart and transform your mind…

Love

How to Manage Time For a Balanced Life

How to Manage Time For a Balanced Life

For many of us, time management is a source of stress.

When we have so many things to do and not enough time to do them in, it’s very easy to feel overwhelmed, lose focus and flounder.

So if you’re ready to put more life and more action into your day, then get a pen and paper (or print out this newsletter) and write down this simple system.

It consists of 3 basic steps.

Here they are:

1. Write down all the tasks you want to get done today in order of importance.

2. Assign a specific block of time for completing each task (like 15 or 30 minutes – depending on the task).

3. Start at the top, set a timer, and focus on nothing else until that task is complete!

Voila – Productivity!

Since I started approaching each work day with a to-do list, I have managed my time and productivity better, which in turn has significantly reduced my stress levels at feeling like I’m wading through a sea of tasks but getting nowhere fast!

Now creating a To-Do List is a fantastic start in acknowledging your day and how you’d like to see it come together.

But using a REAL visualisation exercise to help create what you want to have, be, do, feel and accomplish in that day is even more powerful.

Achieving Your Wellness Book Cover Amazon Kindle
This workbook compliments the launch of my new 12 Week Achieving Your Wellness Coaching Program

Achieving Your Wellness is a comprehensive workbook and plan - complete with insights, templates and worksheets - for creating a life you love!

Life Balance is not a static undertaking.

Finding it requires an acceptance that there will always be something to challenge you in life and disrupt your balance.

BUT!

Once you know what things tip you off balance and recognise more readily when you’re overwhelmed, you can learn tools to get you back on balance as quickly as possible and moving forward towards greater health, energy, nutrition, exercise, weight and stress management.

Think about the following:

1. What is staying the same costing you in love, health, relationships, energy, weight, stress and work satisfaction?

    - What are you missing out on? What can’t you do? Who struggles to support you? How poor is your sleep? How round is your waistline?

2. What will your life be like when you have the energy, life balance, body, career and happiness that you want?

    – How much happier will you feel? How much more energy will you have? What more can you do? How much better will you feel?

Whichever vision brings you more excitement, happiness and hope for the future – hold onto it and do what you need to everyday to steadily bring it into your life.

Your Wellness Vision

What does it mean to have a wellness vision?

Really, it simply means to have some kind of idea in your own mind of how you’d like your life to be. Visualisation is a powerful tool in opening up possibilities to the subconscious mind and saying – Here, this is what I want! Help me make it happen!

Once you know what wellness means for you, then keep focusing on your goals.

Use visualisation to think about the following:

1. What is staying the same costing you in love, health, relationships, energy, weight, stress and work satisfaction?

Body Image/Emotional Eating

2. What will your life be like when you have the energy, life balance, body, career and happiness that you want?

Number One Cause of Fat and Diabetes

Number One Cause of Fat and Diabetes

I’ve just finished reading a remarkable article published in the New York Times last Wednesday February 27th that reviewed the details of an astounding study.

This study – for the first time ever - conclusively pinpointed the #1 cause of type 2 diabetes and by extension, excess, stubborn weight.

They did, however, miss one incredibly important detail, which I’ll explain in a moment but here’s what they did get right.

The study showed that the link between this #1 cause of type 2 diabetes and by extension, extra, stubborn flab, was just as strong as the link between cigarettes and lung cancer.

So what is this #1 cause?

Sugar – plain and simple.

Shocked? I didn’t think so.

But what WAS shocking is what this column goes on to say:

“All calories give off the same amount of energy when burned, but your body treats sugar calories differently, and that difference is damaging.”

FINALLY — someone from the mainstream media acknowledging what we’ve known for years, which is that not all calories are created equal… and that THE most devastating waist-expanding, artery-clogging, diabetes-causing calories you can consume comes from sugar.

HOWEVER, the study and this article miss one incredibly important detail.

It’s not just plain old sugar itself that triggers your body to accumulate excess fat and causes type 2 diabetes – it’s also all of the foods that our bodies quickly turn INTO sugar that does the SAME thing.

These are foods that most of us eat EVERY DAY – foods that we THOUGHT were healthy, but in fact are absolutely LOADED with sugar in various forms.

It’s these hidden forms of sugar that you must absolutely avoid at all costs — they completely shut down your body’s primary fat burning hormone while FORCING your body’s primary fat storage hormone to overact, causing layer upon layer of unwanted fat to accumulate.

Fortunately, I recently came across a fantastic explanation by a world-renowned nutritionist who I’ve been learning a great deal from, in which he outlines all of these hidden forms of sugar – and exactly how you can avoid them.

==> NEVER Eat These 2 Foods to Avoid Excess Flab and Type 2 Diabetes…

This is really a fantastic explanation and I highly recommend you go see it right now and get educated on what you’re putting in your body.

How to Make Raw, Healthy & Guilt-Free Chocolate!

YIMG_7407UM, YUM, YUM!
Last year I started making my own raw chocolate and suddenly realised how easy, more satisfying and nutritious it is. This year, I’ll be holding several workshops on body confidence, empowering women, overcoming limiting beliefs and clean-eating! Stay tuned for the MindBodyFood Raw Chocolate-making workshop in Toowoomba, 2013!

Chocolate is good for you - yes it is! But not the processed store-bought, sugar laden chocolate. We’re talking raw, healthy, unprocessed and Guilt-Free chocolate that’s a pure and nutritious form of Cacao.

Cacao is the seed of a fruit of an Amazonian tree that was brought to Central America during or before the time of the Olmecs. Cacao beans were so revered by the Mayans and Aztecs that they used them as money!

Cacao beans contain no sugar and between 12% and 50% fat depending on variety and growth conditions. Depending on the method, Cacao is made into a raw form of butter or powder

Raw cacao contains hundreds of natural chemicals and is high in magnesium, iron, chromium, tryptophan, and antioxidants.

So… How can you make your own delicious and healthy raw chocolate at home? Easy!

If you feel inclined to take photos of your efforts, please send me pics to include on the Facebook Page!

BASIC RAW CHOCOLATE RECIPE

(100g each = small batch, 250g each = large batch)

100g Raw organic Cacao Butter
100g Raw organic Cacao Powder
100g Raw organic Agave Nectar (reduce the amount to taste as I find equal sweetener to cacao butter and powder is too sweet for mine!)
1 tsp Vanilla Extract or Powder (although the above pic includes cheap essence, this has a different and fake taste so extract or powder is far better)

Melt the Cacao Butter over a bain-marie (bowl over a pot of hot water) – never melt chocolate directly in a pan or pot as it will burn!

Once melted, add the Vanilla extract (and any other flavouring) and stir completely. If using powder add that at the next step.

Combine the melted Cacao Butter and Cacao Powder and mix through thoroughly and quickly.

Add in the Agave Nectar and quickly stir through until completely combined - the chocolate will become shiny and smooth.

Pour or spoon into moulds.
Set in the fridge for at least 30mins, or 15mins in the freezer if you’re in a hurry!

* You can make a variety of chocolate flavours simply by adding various ingredients like orange rind, cacao nibs, cinnamon, chili, roasted almonds or hazelnuts, goji berries, seeds, or any other addition that you think might work. Make a couple of small batches and experiment!

** Some raw chocolate is made using Raw Organic Coconut Oil (can liquify at room temp) instead of Cacao Butter (remains solid at room temp), which requires the chocolate to be kept in the freezer or fridge as it will melt very quickly. I find it also has a greasier taste which I don’t like as much, so again, experiment and choose for yourself.

ENJOY making your own Raw and Real Chocolate..

And don’t forget to make it with LOVE!

Happy SELF-LOVE Day!

HAPPY SELF-LOVE DAY!

Here’s what I think…

You don’t need to have a Valentine to make your day special.

Show YOURSELF some LOVE today!

How do you do that?

Here are a few suggestions:

  • Go easy – no one expects you to be superman/woman except for you! Give yourself permission to slow down.
  • Take a moment with yourself in the mirror. Really look at the person you are and give him/her a SMILE. You may feel silly but you’ll also feel BETTER!
  • Tell yourself how wonderful you are by using positive self-talk and specific affirmations. Repeat, repeat, repeat – ALL day long.
  • Wear your favourite clothes, jewellery, lipstick, shoes or workout gear – especially if it’s brand spanking new! WEAR IT and feel special.
  • BREATHE deeply and OFTEN. With every inhale say to yourself, ” I love and accept myself”. With every exhale say to yourself, “I trust and accept myself”.
  • Write yourself a LOVE note with all the qualities and things you like about yourself. Put it on your bed so you can read it again tonight.
  • Buy yourself a bunch of beautiful flowers and allow the gesture to feel like a real gift to yourself. Every time you look at them say to yourself, “I completely love and accept myself”.

There are so many ways to express self-love and you may already have a few traditions you like to do for yourself.

IF YOU HAVEN’T – There’s no time like NOW to get started on showing yourself some LOVE!

I Love All that I Am

Happy SELF-LOVE Day!

Visualisation for a happy mind, body and soul

Young Woman Bending Down and Smiling with Arms Stretched Back

Did you know that your mind is a powerful tool in helping you create positive changes in your life?

Using creative visualisation can help the subconscious mind to create real and meaningful associations with the feelings and desires of what you truly want to instil in your daily life. This paves the way for a happy mind, body and soul.

Begin by imagining what you would like more of: how you will feel to have it, feel it, be it… and then spend a few minutes playing it out in your mind as if you are already living in that way.

Notice the feelings and sensations that occur for you as you visualise these happy, positive thoughts in your mind.

Visualisation is an easy to use demonstration of positive thinking and behaviour change when practiced regularly. The easiest way to incorporate it into your day is first thing in the morning and last thing in the evening.

Keep focusing on that image throughout the day to never lose sight of your vision.
