5 Steps for Creating Change

5 Steps for Creating Change

To first create change you must know what you want to be different: This is where you are… this is where you want to be.

Visualisation is a powerful tool that can impact your subconscious mind when practised regularly.

Take a few minutes to breathe slowly, deeply and naturally. Settle your breathing into a natural rhythm and just focus on your breathing. Once your thoughts and breathing settle, visualise your life how you want to be living it: use images, feelings and emotions. Make it as real as you can in your minds’ eye… See yourself happy, loved, healthy, productive, full of energy, smiling, laughing, enjoying success (whatever that means to you).

Notice the sounds in the environment where you see yourself. What can you hear: music, voices, nature, laughter…. How does it feel to be in this mental scene: comfortable, relaxed, light, energetic, confident, happy…. Take in the entire experience with all of your senses. See, hear and feel yourself living this future life that you want for yourself. Hold onto the image for a few moments as you focus on these sensations and create a clear picture.

Now sit down quietly with some paper and a pen:

  1. Define what you don’t want – it’s not negative to be clear on what you don’t want. It’s necessary in weeding out the things that you simply aren’t willing to compromise on or live with, through previous experience or personal values.
  2. Be clear on what you do want – once you know what you don’t want it makes it a whole lot easier to then focus on what you do want in your life.
  3. Ask yourself why these changes are important to you: list as many benefits and reasons as you can. That way when someone asks or the going gets tough, you’ll know exactly why you’re making changes in your life because it will be clear in your mind.
  4. Listen to your thoughts and find out where there may be limiting beliefs holding you back from creating this change. Perhaps you’ve tried before many times and now believe it’s just too hard, you’re a failure, or don’t deserve to feel happy. Challenge these beliefs. Are they really true or simply fears that you’re holding onto? If they’re old beliefs from past experiences, replace them with the beliefs that will help you create the changes that you want in your life NOW. Have faith in your own abilities, look at previous triumphs and strengths to help you build resolve.
  5. Plan the steps required to take you from this point to that. Set a clear goal and give it a realistic time frame to attain. Break your goals down into daily, weekly and monthly goals and start by making small but important changes every day. How will you measure your progress?

Then, commit to your goals and yourself. Surround yourself with supportive, positive people who believe in you. And BEGIN!
